Oxbow Animal Health Critical Care, Carnivore is crucial to have on hand if your hedgehog loses its appetite due to illness. Just add water to the powdered formula, and this highly digestible supplement will help give your hedgehog the nutrition and strength it needs to recover. It has high palatability - hedgehogs love this stuff! It can be mixed 50/50 with Critical Care, Omnivore. *Please note that if your hedgehog stops eating, it is imperative that you see a vet immediately. This supplement should only be used under the care of a licensed exotic hedgehog veterinarian.*
This Living World Cage is one of the best cages for your hedgehog. It is easy to clean and provides a safe, well-ventilated and comfortable home for your hedgie. Get the largest size so your hedgehog has lots of space to roam! 46.9"L x 22.8"W x 24.0"H
Hedgehogs love this cricket powder. Mix with water and add to their food in moderation. Cricketerra's human-grade pure cricket powder contains dehydrated and pressure cooked crickets ground into a powder-like consistency. Great to add high quality, abundant protein and essential amino acids!

Hedgehog Grooming & Care
We highly recommend Hedgehogs & Friends - their organic products are fantastic, plus their branding is SO CUTE! Pamper your hedgehog with their moisturizing organic hedgehog shampoo made from soothing aloe leaf juice and saponified coconut oil. Check out their Coconut Quills dietary supplement and skin/quill conditioner. They even offer a Dr. Quills antiseptic wound spray. Plus their Squeaky Clean Lavender Cage Cleaner is a must-have on your hedgehog supply list. *We are not affiliated or sponsored; we just think everything from this shop is simply delightful!*
These curved-tip syringes are perfect for assisted feeding. It is wise to regularly feed your hedgehog liquid treats or food via these syringes, so if the hedgehog falls ill, they will already associate eating from the syringe as a positive experience. It will be so much easier to syringe-feed your hedgehog medication & food when they are sick if you get them used to hand-feeding when they are healthy!
We love using these Ceramic Classic Style Ramekins as water dishes for hedgehogs. They are the perfect height for a hegehog to drink out of, and their heavy weight prevents them from being tipped over. Plus, they're dishwasher and microwave safe!
These adorable heart-shaped ceramic dishes are great for feeding hedgehogs kibble! Their short height makes it easy and comfortable for hedgehogs to eat from. Great for senior hedgies, sick hedgehogs, or hedgehogs with mobility issues. It places the hedgehog's posture in a natural position, close to the ground—mimicking how they would eat in nature! They can be used as water dishes too.
This lightweight, foldable fabric pet cage is a must for traveling with your hedgehog! When you arrive at your destination, this mesh playpen "pops up" and is fully enclosed, keeping your hedgehog safe and secure with plenty of room to roam. It has great ventilation and is tall enough to allow for even the largest hedgehog wheel to fit inside. Be sure to add a heating pad so the floor doesn't get too cold. You will also want a heat source nearby to keep the environment toasty warm—however, please note the heat source SHOULD NOT be placed too close to this pop-up pen, due to the risk of catching on fire.
This luxury pet hedgehog carrier is one of my best purchases ever. It provides adequate ventilation, and you can add a microwavable heating disk to keep the inside toasty-warm. I personally used the white version to travel daily with my hedgehog for 5 years (she came everywhere with me)! I can't recommend it highly enough. Outstanding quality, and great value for the money. I received plenty of compliments on this bag from people who didn't even realize it was a pet carrier!
This electric heated pet bed has two adjustable temperatures and a chew-resistant cord. It is a great warming mat to have in your hedgehog's cage, especially if you have hard, cold floors! I used these daily for many years, and they held up great. They are also easy to wipe down and keep clean. This electric warming mat is a must for traveling with your hedgehog!
Handheld Vacuum for Cage
This lightweight, cordless handheld vacuum cleaner is great for sucking up kibble and stray quills! It is essential to keep your hedgehog's cage clean, and I find that this USB-powered vacuum makes daily cage cleaning quick and easy. It can work for cleaning hedgehog poop too—as long as it is fully dried!
These microfiber cleaning cloths are great for wiping down your hedgehog's cage. They are lint-free, machine-washable, and dryer-safe!
This is an adorable hand-made waterproof case for small hedgehog supplies like nail clippers, tweezers, medication, hedgehog feeding syringes, pre-measured emergency food sachet, collapsible food or water dish, digital thermometer, etc. Great for travel!!
Ultra soft water-proof and stain-proof hedgehog blankets, perfect for cuddling, cage liners, or gifts for hedgehog owners. Machine wash with cold water and dryer-safe at low temperatures!
Best Hedgehog Supplies in 2025
Vet-Tested & Handpicked
The Hedgehog Place’s 2025 vet-tested and owner-approved guide to the best hedgehog supplies — top food, emergency care, cages, heating, bedding, travel gear, and grooming tools. Handpicked for safety, durability, and hedgie comfort. Follow our Amazon links above for current prices!
Why this list matters
We’ve curated the essential hedgehog supplies owners actually use — vet-recommended options and personally-tested picks — so you spend less time hunting for safe gear and more time enjoying your hedgie. This guide focuses on durability, low-shedding materials, easy cleaning, and products that reduce stress and injury risk.
What we tested and how we chose products
We prioritize:
-
Safety: non-toxic materials, chew resistance, low loose fibers.
-
Function: easy to clean, stable dishes, secure carriers.
-
Health: vet-recommended foods and emergency nutrition items.
-
Value & availability: quality that’s commonly available on Amazon for U.S. shoppers.
Where possible we list product types and examples (Oxbow Critical Care, insect-based hedgehog kibbles, chew-resistant heat pads, heavy ceramic dishes). Always follow veterinary guidance for any medical or emergency product!
Best Hedgehog Food & Nutrition
Emergency recovery food (must have): Oxbow Critical Care (Carnivore) — for short-term assisted feeding until you can reach an exotic-pet vet. Use only under veterinary guidance.
Everyday kibble: insect-based formulas (look for brands marketed specifically for hedgehogs or high-quality insect protein kibbles). Aim for high protein, moderate fat, low sugar.
Supplements: cricket powder or freeze-dried insects as toppers for protein variety; use sparingly and rotate sources.
Why it matters: A balanced, species-appropriate kibble plus occasional insect protein supports weight, coat, and activity level.
Recommended Hedgehog Housing & Cages
What to look for: 4–6 sq ft minimum floor space, solid floor (no wire feet), good ventilation, and easy access for cleaning. Living World style cages and large plastic bin conversions (with safe ventilation) are common choices.
Travel carriers: hard-shelled carriers or well-ventilated soft carriers with flat floors, plus room for a small heat source when needed.
Why it matters: Comfortable, secure housing reduces stress, prevents limb injuries, and makes care easier.
Heating & Temperature Control for your Hedgehog
Recommended: chew-resistant, low-wattage pet heat pads with thermostat control and a separate thermometer to monitor ambient temps. Hedgehogs thrive around 72–80°F (22–27°C); maintain stable temps to prevent hibernation attempts.
Safety tip: Never place high-heat items directly under bedding; secure cords and inspect for chewing.
Hedgehog Bedding & Liners
Best choices: fleece liners or soft, low-dust paper bedding for absorbency. Fleece is washable and reusable — many owners use fleece throws trimmed to size (secure edges; remove loose fibers). Avoid cedar or pine shavings.
Cleaning: spot clean daily, full clean weekly mandatory, bi-weekly encouraged.
Hedgehog Feeding & Water Dishes
Top pick: heavy ceramic ramekins or low, wide ceramic bowls — stable, tip-resistant, and easy to clean. Avoid deep bowls that force awkward posture.
Water: small water bottles can be used, but many hedgehogs prefer shallow dishes — test your hedgehog’s preference.
Hedgehog Health, First Aid & Emergency Supplies
Essentials: small feeding syringes (1–5 mL), curved feeding tips, spare Oxbow Critical Care sachets, basic wound supplies (gauze, tape), and a small digital thermometer. Keep your vet’s contact and an exotic emergency hotline on a laminated card.
Note: Use medical supplies only as instructed by a vet.
Hedgehog Grooming & Maintenance
Tools: soft bristle brush, baby body wash for sensitive skin, small animal nail clippers or emery board, and microfiber cloths. For skin or quill issues, consult an exotic-pet vet before topical treatments.
Hedgehog Toys & Enrichment
Good options: Scent-free, chew-safe toys, exercise wheels that are solid and quiet (no wire rungs), small tunnels, and treat puzzles sized for small animals. Rotate toys to prevent boredom.
